Self Improvement and Success

Everything that happens to us happens for a reason. And sometimes, one thing leads to another. Instead of hiding behind your fears and crying over past heartaches, embarrassment and failures, treat those fears as your teachers and they will become your tools toward self improvement and success.

I remember watching Patch Adams – it’s my favorite movie. It’s a great film that will help you improve yourself. Hunter “Patch” Adams is a medical student who failed to make it through the medical board exams.

After months of suffering in melancholy, depression and suicidal attempts – he decided to seek medical attention and was voluntarily admitted to a psychiatric ward. Patch found ways to treat his own ailment and woke up one morning realizing that after all the failure and pain he had gone through, he still wanted to become a doctor. He began to focus on a more positive attitude. He didn’t only improve himself, but also improved the lives of the people around him and their quality of life. Did he succeed?

Needless to say, he became the best doctor this country has ever known. So, when does self improvement become synonymous with success? Where do we start?

Start with these few tips:

Think of yourself in positive terms, or as a “work in progress.” Don’t waste time thinking and feeling as if you’re a failure, because you’re not. Think more about self improvement, not self pitying. Self acceptance is not just about having nice slender legs, or great abs. Concentrate on inner beauty. When other people feel down and negative about themselves, help them move up. It’s good for them and will also make you feel better about yourself.

Our lives are filled with lessons, not mistakes. Don’t feel stupid and doomed forever just because you failed a science quiz. There’s always a next time. Make room for self improvement.

Self improvement results in inner stability, personality development and ....SUCCESS.   Success comes from self confidence, self appreciation and self esteem.

Set meaningful and achievable goals. Self improvement doesn’t turn you into an exact replica of Cameron Diaz or Ralph Fiennes. It will result in an improved and better YOU.

Little things to us might be BIG things to other people. Sometimes, we don’t realize that the little things we do like a pat on the back, saying “hi” or “hello”, greeting someone “good day” or telling Mr. Smith something like “hey, I love your tie!” are simple things that mean so much to other people. When we’re being appreciative about beautiful things around us and other people, we also become beautiful to them.

When you’re willing to accept change and go through the process of self improvement, it doesn’t mean that everyone else is. The world is a place where people have different values and attitudes. We should always remember that there’s no such thing as an “overnight” success.

It’s a wonderful feeling to hold onto the things that you already have now. However be sure to keep in mind, that those may be just a couple of the things you once wished for. There’s a quote that aptly describes this. “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” We are all here to learn life’s lessons. Our parents, school teachers, friends, colleagues, officemates, neighbors... they are our teachers.

When we open our doors to self improvement, we increase our chances of heading onto the road of success.

Five Time-Saving Tips

1. Do certain things fewer times - Things that can be done less or can be done once instead of twice are those things that will help us save a lot of time. Clean your home once every ten days, instead of every 7 days. Prepare a business report every six weeks, rather than every four weeks, if possible. To keep informed about ongoing projects, schedule meetings twice a month, not every week. The list of things that can be done fewer times can go on and on.

2. Compete with yourself - Watch the clock and decide to finish an activity by a certain time. Maintain your focus on the task at hand, and if possible minimize anything that could distract you. You ll work much more efficiently.

3. Ask more from 15 minutes - Can you find 15 minutes a day that you could use more efficiently? Is there lost time in your activities? Or maybe a less important activity you can give up? If you manage to save 15 minutes every day, you will gain a total of 91 hours every year!

4. Develop a list of activities that take only couple of minutes to complete. A list of simple activities will help you to finish each task more quickly and push up your productivity.

5. Plan to complete large projects over a period of time- Rather than to trying to finish an activity all at once, it s sometimes better to plan to work on an activity for 15 minutes and see how much you can accomplish during that interval. Focus and try to do all you can during those 15 minutes.
